Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1843/44 (AH 1259), Hasan Hüsnü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 21, in 1864/65, Hasan Hüsnü began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Hasan Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tuzla. Hasan Hüsnü then moved to nine places in 16 years, then back to Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1883 to 1888, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). Next came Erzurum and Diyarbakır from 1888 to 1892, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1890/91, then Sivas from 1892 to 1900. The last posts were in Van from 1900 to 1902. Few officials served in as many places; 17 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 2,000 in 1890/91, as Müfettiş in Diyarbakır, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 35 years of salary come to 478,440 kuruş, 2.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 8 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
