Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1846/47 (AH 1263), Hızır Abbas Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1862/63, Hızır Abbas began work in Beirut, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1864/65, places Hızır Abbas in Latakia (Lazkiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came seven places in 17 years, then a return to Latakia from 1881 to 1888. The annual lists then follow Hızır Abbas to Baalbek and Muzayrib from 1888 to 1891, then back to Beirut from 1893 to 1902, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Aleppo (Halep) and Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1902 to 1905 and Kastamonu from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to chief director (Başmüdür) in 1903/04. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1864/65 to 2,500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Başmüdür in Tripoli, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
