Life#
Ahmed Muhtar Efendi was born in Edirne in 1846/47 (AH 1263), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1862/63, Ahmed Muhtar began work in Edirne, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 480 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmed Muhtar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Stara Zagora (Eski Zağra), where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Keşan from 1876 to 1880, then Tripoli in 1883/84, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). For 1880 to 1883 the lists have no entry. From 1884 to 1896 the annual entries place Ahmed Muhtar in Zawiya (Zaviye).
Pay rose from 480 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,000 in 1883/84, as 2. Müdür in Tripoli, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 284,640 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1895/96, the list of 1896/97 (AH 1314) gives the status word Vefat (death).
