Life#
Emin Kami Efendi was born in Eskizagra in 1848/49 (AH 1265), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Emin Kami also attended the telegraph school.
Emin Kami began work in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Emin Kami in Istanbul in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi). The annual lists then follow Emin Kami to Stara Zagora (Eski Zağra) from 1870 to 1877, then Pleven (Plevne), Hadımköy and Edirne from 1877 to 1883, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1878. The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1883/84, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 1,200 in 1883/84, as Müfettiş Muavini in Ioannina, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1883/84, the list of 1884/85 (AH 1302) gives the status word Vefat (death).
