Life#
Mahmut Nedim Efendi was born in Eskizagra in 1852/53 (AH 1269), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1867/68, Mahmut Nedim began work in Zagra-i Atik, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Mahmut Nedim as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Chirpan (Çırpan), where the entries run to 1874/75. Mahmut Nedim then moved to Plovdiv (Filibe), Balıkesir and Eskişehir from 1875 to 1883, then Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) from 1883 to 1889. The annual lists then follow Mahmut Nedim to Gediz from 1889 to 1905. The last post was in Uşak in 1905/06. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 500 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Plovdiv, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less.
