Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Tokat in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). At about 22, in 1875/76, Ali Rıza began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Samsun, paid from the start, on 280 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Ali Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Samsun. Ali Rıza then moved to Giresun and Antalya from 1881 to 1885, then Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1885 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza to Suriye and Elazığ from 1892 to 1896, then Erzurum from 1896 to 1903. The last post was in Van in 1903/04. Seven provinces in all, a number reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 280 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 3,150 in 1896/97, as Mektupculuk in Erzurum, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 29 years of salary come to 508,560 kuruş, 2.9 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. The honours of Ali Rıza were a rank (rütbe), the Osmani order and a medal ("iran Hursit Nisani").
