Life#
Born in Tirebolu in 1845 (AH 1261), Ahmet Naili Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a member of the learned profession (ilmiye). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Naili began work in Samsun in 1868/69, at about 23, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 330 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Ahmet Naili as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Giresun. Next came Samsun from 1872 to 1876, then a return to Tirebolu, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Naili to Çarşamba in 1878, then Ünye from 1878 to 1894. From 1894 to 1904 the annual entries place Ahmet Naili in Rize.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 600 in 1875/76, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 34 years the salaries add up to 205,620 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
