Life#
Kurtoğlu İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Kurtoğlu İsmail Hakkı began work in the Duyunu Umumiye Kalemi in Trabzon in 1894/95, at about 18, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, places Kurtoğlu İsmail Hakkı in Rize in the Duyunu Umumiye 2. Kitabeti, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Trabzon, the birthplace, from 1903 to 1911, first in the Duyunu Umumiye 2. Kitabeti, from 1909/10 in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 800 in 1909/10, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Trabzon, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1910/11.
