Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Asım Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ömer Asım also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1892/93, Ömer Asım began work in Trabzon, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Ömer Asım in Hopa as an official (Memur). The annual lists then follow Ömer Asım to Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1896 to 1900. The last posts were in Uşak from 1900 to 1904, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1901/02.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 600 in 1901/02, as Seyyar Memur in Uşak, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
