Life

Born in Mithymna (Molova) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Ahmet Faik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance director (mal müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Faik also wrote French as well as Turkish.

Ahmet Faik began work in Mytilene (Midilli) in 1892/93, at about 17, with 13 unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Only 9 of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for 13 years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Ahmet Faik in Hayrabolu as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last post was in Turbedere in 1906/07.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Hayrabolu, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
