Life#
Abdülaziz Efendi was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülaziz also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Persian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Kirkuk in 1891/92, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Abdülaziz in Kirkuk, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdülaziz then moved to Mosul in 1894/95, then back to Kirkuk from 1895 to 1905. The last post was in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1905/06.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 380 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mosul, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 13 years of salary come to 57,000 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
