Life#
Born in Kütahya in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mehmet Hurşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 712 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Mehmet Hurşit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mocha (Muha), where the entries run to 1905/06. In 1906/07 the lists place Mehmet Hurşit in Kamaran. Mocha, about 3,200 km from Kütahya, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 712 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 1,500 in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Mocha, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 14.8 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 4 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The last annual entry is for 1906/07. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterleri'nde Osmanlı Dönemi Kütahyalı memurlar" by MUSTAFA KOCAKAYA (2018) probably refers to Mehmet Hurşit, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree.
