Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Hüseyin Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Hüseyin had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 31, in 1902/03, Hüseyin began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 31 or older. Every annual entry from 1902/03 to 1905/06 places Hüseyin in the same office, dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), in Istanbul.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 9,600 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
