Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1890/91, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Mehmet Nuri in the same office, dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 75 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 750 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
