Life#
Ahmet Bahaattin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Ahmet Bahaattin also attended the telegraph school and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Ahmet Bahaattin knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Istanbul in 1894/95, at about 23, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ahmet Bahaattin as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1896/97. Ahmet Bahaattin then moved to Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1897 to 1905, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Sirkeci and Lubnan from 1905 to 1909 and Yeni camii postanesi in 1909/10, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1908/09.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 1,500 in 1908/09, the peak, as Müfettiş in Lubnan, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 1,300 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
