Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Mehmet Emin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Mehmet Emin also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Emin began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1893/94, at about 22, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mehmet Emin in Thessaloniki as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Kočani (Koçana) from 1894 to 1897, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Kočani, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
