Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Ahmet Hamdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1895/96, Ahmet Hamdi began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1903/04 places Ahmet Hamdi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1902/03 as a registry clerk (Mukayyit).
The salary went from 75 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 300 in 1902/03, the peak, as Mukayyit in Istanbul, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 16,200 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
