Life#
Mehmet Nail Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Saray Kilercisi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nail also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 22, in 1893/94, Mehmet Nail began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 35 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1897/98, to 1900/01, every annual entry places Mehmet Nail in the same post, official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
Pay rose from 35 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 200 in 1899/1900, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Istanbul, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 6,060 kuruş, 25 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
