Life#
Born in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Abdi Zühtü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Abdi Zühtü had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1885/86, Abdi Zühtü began work in Şebinkarahisar, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Abdi Zühtü in Bitlis as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdi Zühtü then moved back to Şebinkarahisar, the birthplace, from 1890 to 1895, then Adana, Mersin, Kırşehir, Sungurlu and Beynel haremeyn, five places in seven years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1899/1900 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1900/01. The lists have no entry for 1902 to 1904. The last post was in Göynük in 1904/05. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Beynel haremeyn, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
