Life#
Mehmet Şevki Efendi was born in Gümüşhane in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1867/68, Mehmet Şevki began work in Erzincan, paid from the start, on 480 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Mehmet Şevki in Erzincan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Şevki then moved to six places in nine years, from Gümüşhane to Bitlis, then back to Erzurum from 1878 to 1880. Next came Bitlis in 1880/81, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) from 1881 to 1891. From 1891 to 1901 the annual entries place Mehmet Şevki in Tokat. Nine places on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 480 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 800 in 1876/77, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bitlis, when two in three paid officials earned less.
