Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Mehmet Nakip Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Tercume Kalemi Mumeyyizi". Work began in Istanbul in 1860/61, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Mehmet Nakip in Shumen (Şumnu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Nakip then moved to seven places in 11 years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1875/76, then Jaffa (Yafa) from 1876 to 1881. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Nakip to Baalbek from 1881 to 1887, then back to Latakia from 1887 to 1903. The last post was in Hama in 1903/04. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 1,000 in 1869/70, as 2. Müdür in Muş, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less.
