Life#
Mehmet Reşat Efendi was born in Van in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Divriği in 1885/86, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Mehmet Reşat in Shkodër (İşkodra) as a postal official (Posta Memuru). Next came Latakia (Lazkiye) and Beirut (Beyrut) from 1892 to 1895, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1892/93, then a return to Latakia from 1895 to 1900. Mehmet Reşat then moved to Şile from 1900 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Mudanya in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 600 in 1906/07, as 3. Müdür in Mudanya, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
