Life#
Kadri Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Kadri also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
Work began in Damascus in 1887/88, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Kadri as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Damascus, the birthplace. Next came Bekaa and Damascus from 1891 to 1895, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1891/92. From 1897 to 1902 the annual entries place Kadri in Semsekeyn.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 400 in 1891/92, as Muhabere Memuru in Bekaa, when 29 per cent of paid officials earned less.
