Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Hüseyin Adil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a steward (kethüda). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Adil began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with Hüseyin Adil in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1902/03. The last posts were in Konya from 1903 to 1905, with a rise to a post in the clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 730 in 1904/05, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Konya, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 15 years of salary come to 45,840 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
