Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1842/43 (AH 1258), Bekir Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Bekir also attended the telegraph school.
Bekir began work in Istanbul in 1861/62, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 384 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Bekir in the collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1870/71, with a rise to a post in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi) in 1869/70. Next came Bab-i vala and Beyoğlu from 1871 to 1876, then a return to Istanbul from 1876 to 1879. Bekir then moved to Köyceğiz in 1879/80. From 1881 to 1906 every annual entry places Bekir again in Istanbul, first in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), from 1903/04 in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi). Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 42 years or more.
The salary went from 384 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 750 in 1876/77, the peak, in the Sevk Kalemi in Istanbul, when 63 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1905/06, the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
