Life#
Born in Arapgir in 1829/30 (AH 1245), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The official began work in Istanbul in 1853/54, at about 24, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From 1854/55 to 1906/07 every annual entry places the official in Istanbul, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1867/68 in the Vezne Kitabeti. A career like this is rare; 15 of the 171 officials whose entries span 40 years or more stayed in one place throughout. No other of the 5,211 officials has entries spanning 54 years.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to a peak of 1,100 in 1878/79, in the Vezne Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 800 kuruş. In all, 53 years of salary come to 441,600 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
