Life#
Mehmet Ziver Efendi was born in Erzurum in 1831/32 (AH 1247), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi); Mehmet Ziver also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Armenian.
Mehmet Ziver began work in Kastamonu in 1852/53, at about 21, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1852/53, with Mehmet Ziver as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Kastamonu. Next came Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1853 to 1856, then Diyarbakır from 1856 to 1861. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Ziver to Damascus (Şam) from 1861 to 1871, then Erzurum, Behramki and Kulp from 1871 to 1876. For 1872 to 1874 the lists have no entry. The last post was in Besni in 1876/77, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1852/53 to a peak of 1,000 in 1861/62, as 2. Müdür in Damascus, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 200,640 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1876/77.
