Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1837/38 (AH 1253), Mehmet İzzet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Mehmet İzzet had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Arazi Kalemi in Erzurum in 1857/58, at about 20, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, places Mehmet İzzet in Erzurum, the birthplace, in the land office (Arazi Kalemi), where the entries run to 1870/71, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1868/69. The lists have no entry for 1871 to 1874. From 1874 to 1904 the annual entries place Mehmet İzzet in Istanbul, first in the Nufus Kalemi, from 1876/77 as Tekaud Sandigi. Entries spanning 48 years are rare, reached by only 21 of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 800 in 1879/80, as Tekaud Sandigi in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 650 kuruş. Over 44 years the salaries add up to 286,068 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1903/04. Mehmet İzzet received a medal ("Hicaz demiryolu").
