Life#
Ragib Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1834/35 (AH 1250), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Defteri Hakani Kalemi in Istanbul in 1847/48, at about 14, on a first salary of 75 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1853/54, with Ragib in the land office (Arazi Kalemi) in Bursa, where the entries run to 1864/65. Ragib then moved to Edirne from 1865 to 1877, with a rise to DH Mudur Muavini. The last posts were in Kütahya from 1877 to 1878 and Bereket in 1883/84. In place of a title the lists give Azil (dismissal) for 1878/79 and 1884/85.
Pay rose from 75 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to a peak of 2,000 in 1865/66, as DH Mudur Muavini in Edirne, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 277,320 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. Pay rose to 26.7 times the first salary; fewer than 3 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The final annual entry is for 1884/85. Ragib received a rank (rütbe).
