Life#
El-Hac Ahmet Nafiz Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1834/35 (AH 1250), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); El-Hac Ahmet Nafiz also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian.
At about 18, in 1852/53, El-Hac Ahmet Nafiz began work in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1853/54, places El-Hac Ahmet Nafiz in Trabzon as an official (Memur). The annual lists then follow El-Hac Ahmet Nafiz to Erzurum from 1854 to 1860. The last post was in Rhodes (Rodos) in 1860/61, with a rise to Gumruk Muduru.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to 1,000 in 1860/61, the peak, as Gumruk Muduru in Rhodes, when two in three paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 68,400 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1860/61.
