Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1834/35 (AH 1250) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1847/48, the official began work in Istanbul, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1853/54, with the official in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1859/60. Next came Sinop in 1860/61, as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), and Trabzon in 1861/62. From 1862 to 1885 the annual entries place the official in Ioannina (Yanya).
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1853/54 to 1,200 in 1862/63, the peak, as Mukayyit in Ioannina, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 327,240 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. Pay rose to 24 times the first salary; fewer than 4 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. After the last annual entry, for 1884/85, the list of 1885/86 (AH 1303) gives the status word Vefat (death).
