Life#
Mustafa Zihni Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Zihni also attended the telegraph school.
At about 18, in 1867/68, Mustafa Zihni began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Mustafa Zihni as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ioannina (Yanya), where the entries run to 1876/77. The last posts were in Parga from 1877 to 1884, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 600 in 1877/78, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Parga, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1883/84.
