Life#
Süleyman Reşid Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1848/49 (AH 1265), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. At about 17, in 1866/67, Süleyman Reşid began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 320 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Süleyman Reşid in Üsküdar as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1871/72. Next came a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1872 to 1880, then Tersanei amire, Babi seraskeri and Mecca (Mekke) from 1880 to 1889. Süleyman Reşid then moved back to Babi seraskeri from 1889 to 1895, then Kuruçeşme from 1895 to 1902. The last posts were in Babi mesihat from 1902 to 1907, first as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür), from 1906/07 as a director (Müdür). Entries spanning 41 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials. The farthest post, Mecca, lay about 2,400 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 320 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 2,500 in 1906/07, as Müdür in Babi mesihat, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
