Life#
Mehmet Raşit Efendi was born in İzmit in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Nalbur". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Raşit also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in İzmit in 1865/66, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Mehmet Raşit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Geyve. Mehmet Raşit then moved to Ankara and Yozgat from 1869 to 1872, then back to İzmit, the birthplace, from 1872 to 1874. From 1874 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Raşit in Adapazarı, first as 3. Müdür, from 1893/94 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), from 1896/97 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) and from 1899/1900 as 2. Müdür. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.
