Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in İzmit in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 11, in 1864/65, Mehmet Nuri began work in the Arazi Kalemi in İzmit, on a first salary of 280 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Mehmet Nuri in the land office (Arazi Kalemi) in İzmit, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1888/89, with a rise to DH Baskitabeti in 1872/73. Next came Bitola (Manastır) from 1893 to 1906. The last post was in Gümüşhane in 1906/07, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi). In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1889/90. Entries spanning 41 years are rare, reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 280 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 675 in 1906/07, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi in Gümüşhane, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 37 years of salary come to 195,360 kuruş, 84 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
