Life#
Halil Veliyuddîn Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1877/78, Halil Veliyuddîn began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in İzmit, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1880/81 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Halil Veliyuddîn in İzmit, first as Emlak Memuru, from 1882/83 in the DH 2. Kitabeti and from 1886/87 in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi). The lists give Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1885/86 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 770 in 1905/06, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi in İzmit, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 140,808 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
