Life#
Hafiz Suleyman Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Suleyman in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1877/78. Suleyman then moved to Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1878 to 1879, with a rise to a post in the Tapu Kitabeti in 1878, then Bitlis from 1880 to 1887, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi). Next came Malatya from 1887 to 1895. From 1895 to 1908 the annual entries place Suleyman in Şanlıurfa (Urfa).
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 1,000 in 1907/08, the peak, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi in Şanlıurfa, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 285,768 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08. Suleyman received a rank (rütbe).
