Life#
Hacı Ata Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Dergah seyhi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ata also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Ata in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Mubayaat Memuru. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1878 to 1882.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 600 in 1876/77, as Asakir Muavini Silkine, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 27,000 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1881/82. Ata received the Mecidi order.
