Life#
Born in Sofia (Sofya) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Cevdet Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 45, in 1896/97, Ahmet Cevdet began work in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka), paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Only 15 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 45 or older. The annual lists begin in 1896/97, with Ahmet Cevdet as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) in Didymoteicho. Next came Edirne and Bitola (Manastır) from 1897 to 1902, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1901/02. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1902 to 1905, with a rise to official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to a peak of 450 in 1903/04, as Mevrude Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 37,200 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
