Life#
Mehmet Raşit Efendi was born in Bolu in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Raşit also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic.
At about 27, in 1876/77, Mehmet Raşit began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1877/78 to 1904/05 places Mehmet Raşit in Istanbul, first in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi), from 1878/79 in the Emanet Kitabeti and from 1901/02 as Muayene Memuru.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 725 in 1895/96, the peak, in the Emanet Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 652 kuruş. Over 29 years the salaries add up to 201,252 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
