Life#
Born in Bolu in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mehmet Faik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Faik began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Bolu in 1869/70, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 235 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmet Faik in Bolu, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1884/85, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1877/78. Next came Düzce from 1885 to 1896. The last posts were in Gerede from 1896 to 1905.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 500 in 1896/97, as Muhabere Memuru in Gerede, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 152,760 kuruş, 83 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
