Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Ahmed Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Bikfaya (Bekfiya) in 1869/70, at about 15, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Ahmed in Muzayrib (Müzeyrib) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Ahmed to Gaza (Gazze) and Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1877 to 1880, then Jaffa (Yafa) from 1880 to 1888. Next came Beirut (Beyrut) from 1888 to 1892, then a return to Jerusalem from 1892 to 1895. The last post was in Jaffa again in 1895/96.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 500 in 1886/87, as Muhabere Memuru in Jaffa, when 42 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
