Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Muhittin Sırrı Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1871/72, at about 14, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Muhittin Sırrı in Istanbul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Muhittin Sırrı to Yeni camii postanesi in 1877/78 and Beyoğlu in 1878, then Jableh (Cebele) from 1878 to 1892. Next came Beirut and Damascus (Şam) from 1892 to 1897, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1895/96. From 1897 to 1909 the annual entries place Muhittin Sırrı in Baniyas (Banyas), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 675 in 1897/98, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Baniyas, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 34 years of salary come to 223,680 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
