Life#
Ahmet Vasfi Efendi was born in Eski cuma in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Vasfi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Arabic and Persian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Vasfi began work in Bulgaristan in 1874/75, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Ahmet Vasfi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen (Şumnu), where the entries run to 1877/78. Next came Kastamonu from 1878 to 1888, then Çankırı from 1888 to 1899, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Tarhuna in 1900/01 and Yemen from 1901 to 1903. The farthest post, Yemen, lay about 3,500 km from Eski cuma, and 17 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 1,500 in 1901/02, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Yemen, when 94 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
