Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Mehmet Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet also attended the telegraph school.
Mehmet began work in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mehmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beşiktaş. The last posts were in Varna from 1876 to 1878 and Kucuk karaburun in 1880/81, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1876/77. For 1878 to 1880 the lists have no entry.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 500 in 1876/77, as Seyyar Memur in Varna, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1880/81.
