Life#
Born in Burgas (Burgaz) in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mehmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Tevfik had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1871/72, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Pomorie (Ahyolu), with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mehmet Tevfik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Varna, where the entries run to 1877/78. Next came Kurukavak, Pristina (Priştine), Kosova and Zagra, four places in four years, then Drama from 1882 to 1891, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru). The last post was in Ohrid (Ohri) in 1891/92.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 600 in 1878/79, as Muhabere Memuru in Kurukavak, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1891/92.
