Life#
Mehmet Nusret Efendi was born in Sivas in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mehterbasi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tokat in 1868/69, at about 14, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Mehmet Nusret in Yozgat as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Kırşehir from 1876 to 1881. From 1881 to 1893 the annual entries place Mehmet Nusret in Ankara, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1892/93 as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 1,200 in 1892/93, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Ankara, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1892/93. Mehmet Nusret probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Sivaslı devlet adamları" by NESLİHAN EROL (2022) (the name and the birthplace agree).
