Life#
Born in Ankara in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Viçen Remzi Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Viçen Remzi had four years of schooling, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Work began in Ankara in 1883/84, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Viçen Remzi as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Ankara, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1895/96. The last posts were in Mersin in 1897/98 and Serres (Siroz) in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 300 in 1894/95, as Posta Memuru in Ankara, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 32,820 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
