Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Hasan Cemal Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Cemal began work in Fatih in 1885/86, at about 19, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Hasan Cemal in Fatih as a deliverer (Müvezzi), where the entries run to 1890/91. Hasan Cemal then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1891 to 1901, then back to Fatih from 1901 to 1904. The last posts were in Aksaray from 1904 to 1907.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 350 in 1904/05, the peak, as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Aksaray, when one in three paid officials earned less.
