Life#
Abdurrahman Sezai Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1886/87, Abdurrahman Sezai began work in Thessaloniki, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Abdurrahman Sezai in Serres (Siroz) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Abdurrahman Sezai then moved to Kumanovo in 1891/92, then Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1892 to 1899, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The annual lists then follow Abdurrahman Sezai to Eskişehir in 1900/01. The last posts were in Skopje (Üsküp) from 1901 to 1904.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 1,000 in 1898/99, as 2. Müdür in Shkodër, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 122,700 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
